How much does a beat cost? It depends less on the beat itself than on the license you buy with it. The same instrumental can be leased cheaply by many artists, or bought once with exclusive rights for much more. At NKSounds the prices are fixed and public: €49 for a Standard license, €499 for an exclusive. Here is what moves a beat's price and what rappers actually pay.

Lease or exclusive: what the price really pays for

Most beats online are sold as a lease, a non-exclusive license. The producer keeps the beat, can sell it to other artists and gives you the right to release a song on it under set conditions. Leases are the cheapest option, and many producers sell them in tiers: an MP3 lease, a WAV lease, a lease with the stems, an unlimited lease, each adding better files or wider rights.

An exclusive costs far more because the producer stops selling the beat. You are paying for scarcity: no new artist can buy it after you. Exclusives usually include the stems and uses that leases leave out, such as radio, TV and live shows.

So how much should a beat cost? Enough that you know exactly what you get: untagged files, the rights your release needs and a written contract. A cheap beat with no contract is not a bargain if a platform later asks you to prove your rights. Match the license to the song: a lease for tracks you release often, an exclusive for the single you will put money behind. Our lease vs exclusive beats guide covers the legal side in detail.

How much do rappers pay for beats?

It depends on where they are in their career. Independent rappers mostly lease beats online, release often and only go exclusive when a song starts to grow. Signed artists more often work directly with producers, with fees and royalty splits negotiated deal by deal. Do rappers buy beats, then? Yes, and some big songs started that way: Lil Nas X recorded Old Town Road on a beat he bought online from the Dutch producer YoungKio. More than 300 artists have worked with NKSounds.

Buying from Nigeria or South Africa

"How much does a beat cost in Nigeria?" and "How much does a beat cost in South Africa?" come up often. On NKSounds the answer is the same as anywhere else: the prices above, charged in euros. Your bank or PayPal converts the amount into naira or rand when you pay, so the final figure depends on the exchange rate and your bank's fees. Before checkout, make sure your card is enabled for international online payments. Local producers set their own prices in local currency, so compare what each license includes, not just the number.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a beat cost?

It depends on the license. A non-exclusive lease is the cheapest way to release a song on a beat; an exclusive costs much more because the producer stops selling it. At NKSounds, the Standard license is €49 with untagged MP3 and WAV, and the exclusive is €499 with the stems included. Stems and extended rights can be added to the Standard.

How much do rappers pay for beats?

Most independent rappers pay for a lease, the cheapest license, and move to an exclusive only for songs they plan to push. Prices vary a lot from one producer to another, so compare what each license includes: file quality, stems, streaming caps, radio and live rights, and whether you get a written contract.

Why do exclusive beats cost more than leases?

Because the producer gives up every future sale of that beat. Once you buy the exclusive, the beat leaves the store and nobody else can license it, so the price covers income the producer will no longer earn. Exclusives also tend to include the stems and wider rights, such as radio, TV and concerts.

How much does a beat cost in Nigeria or South Africa?

On NKSounds, the same as everywhere: €49 for a Standard license and €499 for an exclusive, charged in euros by card or PayPal. Your bank or PayPal converts the price into naira or rand at checkout, so check the exchange rate and confirm that your card accepts international online payments before you buy.
